Equipment and Software Requirements
-----------------------------------
To use PC PURSUIT, all you need are --
- a telephone line
- an auto-answer modem - 300 or 1200 bps
- a terminal or a PC with asynchronous communications software
PARAMETERS:
-----------
Communication parameters for your hardware should be set-up
consistent with the PC or BBS or host computer you wish to dial.
FILE TRANSFERS:
---------------
Most transfer protocols are compatible with PC PURSUIT.
Across TELENET'S Public Data Network, PC PURSUIT transmits
data utilizing 8 bit transperency. Due to XMODEM'S use of
single block by block acknowledgement of data sent, XMODEM
file transfers can take slightly longer. There are
however, more efficent transfer protocols such as KERMIT.
AUTO-ANSWER:
------------
Some communication software packages (such as Crosstalk and
Smartcom II) require that you change the mode to auto-answer
in order to receive your call-back. (Consult you manual for
specifics) Other modems and/or software will both dial and
answer automatically with no change in mode.
Some tips if you need to switch modes --
1) First place your call request and then get ready to
receive your call-back. Change from DIAL mode to
ANSWER mode by simply getting back to your software
main menu or command level and then switch it to auto-answer.
2) After you receive your call-back and while you await the
final connection of your PC PURSUIT call request, you
may need to switch your software back to DIAL mode. The
reason for this is to ensure you are back in full-duplex
mode and this should prevent any echoing problems you
may encounter. Typically, DIAL mode is full-duplex and
AUTO-ANSWER mode is half-duplex.
Example with Crosstalk:
MODE COMMAND PC PURSUIT STEP
-------- --------- -------------------
1) Call MO CA Dial access number
2) Answer MO AN Get ready to receive call-back
3) Call MO CA After call-back, change
back to full-duplex before
final call request connection
is made.
